Zeolite Absorption Box
Assemble the compact day/night zeolite box for dry climates.
Time
2–3 hours
Difficulty
Intermediate
Tools
- Screwdriver
- Drill
- Hot glue or silicone
- Marker
Safety
- Use molecular sieve grade zeolite labeled for desiccant use
- Vent hot extraction carefully — surfaces get hot in sun
How to put it together
- 1
Build the housing
Assemble a small box (~30×20×15 cm) with a lid. Cut mesh vents that can open at night and close by day.
- 2
Load zeolite
Place ~2 kg dry zeolite (13X or similar) in a breathable mesh tray inside so air contacts the beads.
- 3
Add extraction chamber
Fit the aluminum black-coated chamber that will sit in sun during regeneration. Ensure vapor can flow to the bottle.
- 4
Attach collection bottle
Connect a clean 2L glass bottle under the condenser outlet with a sealed food-safe joint.
- 5
Night absorption
Open vents overnight so zeolite absorbs moisture (indicator blue→pink if using indicator beads).
- 6
Day extraction
Close vents, place the extraction face in sun 4–6 hours. Water should drip into the bottle as zeolite regenerates.
- 7
Cycle & store
Repeat nightly. Store spare zeolite dry. Do not wash beads with tap water.
Tips
- Works even around 15% RH — patience on very dry weeks
- Sun angle on the black chamber drives extraction speed
- Keep vents insect-screened
